Confused leader standing at a crossroads. Effective leadership.

Here’s why it’s a mistake to believe that certainty is the key to effective leadership.

In fact, the first half of my career groomed me to think this way:

  • Demanding expertise.
  • Upholding self-reliance.
  • Reluctant to ask for help.
  • Never admitting ignorance.
  • Insisting on knowing all the answers.

But what if embracing uncertainty and relinquishing the need to know everything are actually what’s needed?

I’ve realized that the more complex the leadership role, the more essential it becomes to be comfortable with not knowing.

Yet, how do we transition when our environments have demanded certainty for so long?

It’s a continuous journey, but here’s how I began:

  1. Humility: Accepting that I don’t know everything and being open to continual learning.
  2. Self-awareness: Using clarity of my Blueprint as a foundation.
  3. Seeking other perspectives: Meeting with my accountability squad for the past 4 years.
  4. Engaging a coach: Instrumental in helping me embrace uncertainty.

How might the strategies that have always worked for you be insufficient for future leadership roles? Embrace uncertainty and effective leadership.
