Why knowing when to fold is more important than the hand you’re dealt. Your response is what matters most.
The other day, somebody pointed out something to me during a conversation. Mindset is a core principle of mine—focusing on the things you can control and bringing the right mindset to any situation. They noted that I had been in many leadership positions and wondered if I needed control over everything—was I a micromanager?
When I talk about controlling the things you can control, I’m referring to external circumstances life throws your way. Those cards you’re dealt regardless of your desires. I’m talking about how you will respond when faced with seemingly insurmountable odds.
You will face countless situations like that in your life. What you control is your response—your decisions. For example, I don’t control the economy, housing prices, or the stock market in finance. Doing so causes anxiety and stress. So, I focus on what I can control.
- where I store my capital
- building an alternate source of financing
- choosing assets that align with my strategy
- choosing assets that offer me options and a level of control (see what I did there?)
I work on becoming more resilient to have a greater ability to handle those uncontrollable events. I want to be able to keep moving forward or bounce back when knocked off track.
While I don’t think micromanaging is the most effective way to lead, that’s not what I’m talking about.
