Author and coach, Brandon Jenkins, pictured outside in the evening. He writes about not letting your beliefs hold you back.

You’re in a leadership role, facing big decisions, and
your beliefs are holding you back.

Here’s the thing:

𝗪𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲’𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳.

Why?

Because we operate based on beliefs and assumptions
that have been shaped by our past experiences.

Here’s the kicker:

𝗪𝗲’𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲.

Take this example from my career:

-> I used to think I had to know the “right” answer before
speaking up in meetings.

-> I thought others expected me to have it figured out.

-> I didn’t want to look stupid.

What did I realize?

  • Sharing perspective isn’t about being right or wrong.
  • It’s about bringing diverse views to the table.

But that belief held me back for years.

How many of your beliefs might be wrong or outdated
for the role you’re in now?

  • What’s keeping you from acting?
  • What assumptions are you carrying around?

𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝘄𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗳𝘀.

Then you test them to see if they’re true.

  • Still valid for this context? Keep them.
  • No longer valid for the context? Get rid of them.
  • Adopt new ones that empower growth and progress.

What belief are you ready to test?
